The accompanying person must be at least 23 years old, have held the corresponding driving licence for at least three years, and must no longer hold a probationary licence. The accompanying person is responsible for helping ensure that the learner drive is conducted safely and that traffic rules are observed.
During a learner drive, a blue plate with a white “L” must be clearly visible at the rear and removed when the vehicle is not being used for a learner drive. In a car, the accompanying person generally sits next to the learner, except in particular on practice areas or while reversing or parking. Under the law currently in force, the accompanying person must be able to reach the handbrake easily.
Busy roads should only be used once the learner has sufficient training. Motorways and semi-motorways may only be used once the learner is ready for the practical test. Exercises such as hill starts, turning around and reversing are prohibited on busy roads and should be avoided in residential areas where possible.
Anyone who obtains a Category B learner's permit before turning 20 must generally complete a twelve-month learning period. This is why the learner's permit can be issued from age 17. Following an evaluation, the Federal Roads Office confirmed in 2026 that the system would remain in place.
